Mercedes A-Class 2015 - 2017 hatchback in-depth review | Mat Watson Reviews

- Mercedes has waved goodbye to its previous unconventional A-Class design in favour of a more standard but sleeker body, in keeping with rivals such as the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Volkswagen Golf. However, whilst the design may have undergone a facelift what about the rest of the A-Class? Can Mercedes justify it’s price tag, or do rivals simply out class this Mercedes? What model is the most fuel efficient and, can the interior pass the infamous carwow flick test? Find out all the answers and more on what I think of the Mercedes A-Class in this in-depth review in full 4K.

But why Matt? 🤔 You literally said the car is crap ffs! 🤦♂️😳🙄
The best thing about this car is that it’s affordable for a lot of people. Also it’s a very stylish, modern, comfortable, sporty car all in one. Couldn’t ask for much more. The only thing I would say is after a few years be prepared to experience some technical issues. Also, the infotainment system isn’t the greatest. The ride comfort is perfect in my opinion but some may find it to firm.
Really not a bad car in my opinion as long as you’ve got money left over in your pocket once you’ve bought the car. I was extremely happy with mine it never failed to put a smile on my face. Especially when in sports mode. Great car 😀
Better than it’s rivals in my opinion. The Audi A1 is very dull, the BMW 1 series is ugly. The Golf, once again is boring. I would certainly choose the A class over any other. It just has that cutting edge and exciting element to it that it’s rivals lack.
Just so I’m sure does it have ambient lighting and sports, eco and comfort mode? Also what’s the top speed and I’m talking about the 2017 1.6l a180d
A1 is not in the class of the a180, the A3 is
You know what would be great to see? New gen vs. old gen direct comparisons.
This aged very well because the latest a-class are amazing
The biggest compliment I can give Mat and Carwow is that they entice me to watch videos of cars that I otherwise wouldn't be interested in. Always been a fan of these reviews guys.
You are right! Suddenly i find myself watching videos about super dull Mercedeses. He's really good
You are right! Suddenly i find myself watching videos about super dull Mercedeses. He's really good
"Ambient mood lighting colors, to suit your mood - or lack of taste." Mat Watson, telling it like it is since 1968.
We've had a A180 2013 urban(petrol) for almost 2 years and we are very happy...but danm look at all of these hate comments about this car
Agreed I just picked up a 2016 A180d and it feels totally premium and looks amazing as well. I think the hate comes from Matts biased negative tone about the car
Endrit is the back seat good ?
Kavin Hood it’s ok for average heights and it can seat 2 people comfortably I would say, but if you’re really tall and you wanna seat 3 it will start to get a little rough.
My mum has a 2014 mercedes a 200 CDI, and for what it is for the money she paid, it's pretty rubbish. 15000 plus a 2005 vauxhall astra (in 2017) for a car without parking sensors, sat nav, a reversing camera, and electrically folding mirrors is almost criminal
Rian Robinson yeah it's a little expensive after extras compared to something like a golf. A shame that some of these options aren't standard for a 2014 car at this price point
As someone who drives a W176 on a daily basis in city traffic, I can tell you that the steering isn’t bad at all. It’s comfortable to steer with one hand, but also precise enough for me to make some pretty quick and tight maneuvers in rush hour traffic. Highway performance is also pleasing. The other negative aspects you’ve pointed out can also be easily overlooked, and won’t bother you in the long run.
What might end up bothering you is the 7G-DCT transmission, which isn’t in any way, shape, or form proper for city traffic, or ideal when combined with a small engine. It can be jerky at times. It is somewhat difficult to play with when climbing up a curb to park on the sidewalk. In the end, you learn how to use it properly by fine-tuning your right foot and the amount of pressure it exercits on the throttle.
The fact that it rides so low also makes it not quite ideal for roads that have potholes. I’ve done, in the past 6 months, more swerving than I’ve ever hoped I would have to. Mine has the R16 wheels of the Style line, but shocks can still be felt due to the stiff suspension.
It’s a great car, but it’s certainly not for beginners, or for those that just buy a Merc because it’s a Merc.
You might just be telling yourself that because of how much you spent on a hatchback m8
I feel like he’s just bashed the car the whole video...
He’s a bmw man
The car is a pile of shit what do you expect🤦🏼♂️
I've driven one of these and I can confirm that Mat was absolutely right about everything.
@@doctoremil2678 In left hand drive cars the gas pedal is so far to the right that depending on your shoes, it might be hard to even reach it without accidentally pressing it. (Because the foot room is very limited in it's height the further you get to the right. (That wasn't supposed to rhyme))
@@Ouaziz186 my dad has one with amg package but i hate it
Mat Watson just has to be the best car reviewer EVER! None of that stupid drifting and/or circuit speed testing, just “real world” practical info highlighting the good and the bad. Brill...
Who are you talking about?
Duh??@@Dranreb865
@@Dranreb865 there nan mate. Obviously the bloke who introduced himself as matt watson and whos the main bloke of the entire video. Specsavers does a world of good😂
I really like the A class. It is a massive improvement from the 2004 and up models. It might be a little expensive but you get what you pay for, if you buy this it would be money well spent.
Plane Spotter 757 I was disappointed with its handling though
Plane Spotter 757 I think he just means compared to other cars of the same price it’s a disappointment.
how is it money well spent when the base spec a classes depreciate like a stone. avoid this overpriced renault
Just bought a darkgrey A200 with the whole AMG package, panoramic roof, pretty much every option. I love this car, it looks absolutely stunning. I also owned an A3 s-line and a 1-serie with m-sport. Both never gave me the feelings this car gives me when i look at it and drive it.
Hello, how has the car been treating you? Any feedbacks from driving it?
@@SelloTheodorance Drove it for a little over 3 years and sold it march 2023 for a bmw z4 m40i. Never had any problems with the a class and it were a nice 3 years!

I am looking at buying 2017 AMG package with panoramic sunroof and I really don't care about performance and other things I just wanted to now about mechanically of its reliable the asking price is 15,88954 odollars. Do you think it's a good deal?
Not sure why everyone is giving this car shit...I've just got given one as a company car and it's fucking awesome to drive!
Jamie Mckaye which one do you have I was thinking of getting the 1.5 diesel is it worth it. Baring in mind first car
Raheem, exactly the same one. I got the AMG line. It's fucking fantastic!! lol Fuel is great and its nippy as hell! :)
I'm looking at the 1.5 sport can't wait
Exactly. This is a really good car. Don't mind this "review", it's very biased.
Don't do it
I have this car, and it runs like a dream. Especially Motorway driving, i get around 60mpg everytime, it is the A200 Diesel version though, 180 or less just feels a little slow due to its weight. I personally Love it.
any repairs etc until now ? :X
Co ask
Bought my AMG line A class through car wow and got a great deal actually, should arrive in a week or so now :)
good for you really nice car
How did you get on with your AMG A-Class; any good?
Legend has it if you comment early, Carwow replies to you
Legend has it that carwow is tired of these comments.
Hilarious and original.
I disagree. I ditched a A3, in favour of my new A200d AMG Line. Its a much better drive. More driver feedback through the wheel, better handline when pressing on. WAY better Dual Clutch gearbox, and its faster with better MPG. PS: The AMG Line has much better materials on the Dash. I did have a A180d Sport for a week and the dash looked cheap in comparision.
You've got a shit car mate
Man said he ditched an A3 wow you fucking idiot😂😂😂🤦🏼♂️
I agree my parents have had an a220 for 4 years and I learnt to drive on it
The offset pedals have been a problem with mercedes cars for ages, wonder why it's not been addressed
same with bmw. stop complaining
This review is not entirely accurate. Yes the Sport and SE trims do not handle that well. However the AMG Line drives like a very different car. Some people think the AMG Line is just a body kit, but its not. You also get. What you get apart from "The looks".
Mercedes branded brakes with Drilled disks.
AMG springs and shocks (AMG Sport comfort springs).
AMG Dynamic Suspension system. If optioned.
AMG Line Specific gearbox & engine programming.
AMG Direct Steer sports steering.
AMG Line DCT's also have Launch Control. (100ms shift times).
Inside you also get AMG sports seats and a very nice Flat Bottomed steering wheel.
I do 1000 miles a week in mine and absolutely love it. Mine is the A200d DCT, and does 65 to 68mpg average.
DJ_PaulTUK still a a class boring car, rather have a 1 series
Explain to me why your carbuyer review of the a class when it first came out was all bout how well it drove, how nice it was and how good the engines were. In this one all you seemed to do was criticise it. ??
I have the aclass sport & trust me it's not as bad as he's making it to be !
Matt you are the best in presenting cars simple funny and full with perfect information keeeeeeep going you are the best
What about a Mazda 3 review? Would love to see that one :)
true...i've been liking the mazdas as of late...they seem like really good quality, very good equipment, for not much money...and they look good to me
Exactly my thoughts! They really seem like great value for money
saw a pic of a mazda and ferrari after an accident. ferrari was wrecked. mazda was still in good shape
'stupidly large phone' 3:12 I'm dying
3:12 "stupidly large phone" 😂😂😂
I drive a Mercedes A180 daily, and I don't really have any major gripes with it. I don't know why this review and comments are so negative.
Box0rz because you haven’t tried to drive an Audi A3 or bmw 1 series I mean yeah you will find the driving experience decent:D
I have tried both the A180 and a 118i BMW and yes, the 118i is far superior in drive quality, but the A class has a significantly better interior and more driver aids as standard.
Because they want to feel smart by being contrarians. Sadly there's always people like these talking shit about something no matter how good it is
When you say "competitors are more practical" does that include the BMW 1 series? That would be fun to know, as the Merc is FWD and BMW is ditching the magnificent RWD in favour of practicality. I really don't think the beemer is unpractical enough to ditch RWD and risk their image and driving dynamics.
The irony
one more thing!
On bigger rims, the car is not only crashy over potholes but also VERY noisy inside. The tyres roar is omnipresent even at low speed, much more intrusive than in an 1 series or A3.
I’ve had this car for 3 years and it’s got amazing handling trust me
Fantastic! without a doubt a best car reviewer on RUclips. I don't get why he said the Mercedes manual transmission isn't very good I've had pretty much every C Class that's came out and hoping to get the Cla and all of them are fantastic the shifts are so fast and the biting point is very low down on the clutch so east to use.
Hands down Matt is the best car reviewer in the world after Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond.
Mat, I watch your show almost everyday as I'm the biggest car head. Just one question, why do you like testing diesel cars so much?
Maybe in the UK people buy diesel cars more due to high fuel prices, that's just my speculation.
In Europe diesel cars sell very well. Lower taxes, better fuel economy, more reliable engines.
In fact in the UK the price of petrol and diesel isn't even that different (In germany diesel is quite a lot cheaper).
Your reviews are always onpoint, and fun to watch!! Nicely done Mat.
People are only interested in this car because of the badge, sad, So many better cars out there at this price point.
Not true. I have replied to others in comments below.
You can tell that when you see their drivers, all desperate wannabe show offs 😂
@Joshua L
Said the guy desperately trying to get his dickish point over.
your the one who seems desperate !
Agree a VW Golf, Vauxhall Astra or Ford Focus for my next car, would not be seen dead in this or an Audi A1 or BMW one series.
I test drove the A180 AMG Line and I thought the material quality inside was more upmarket than a top spec Honda or a Mazda. The build quality is certainly on the same level with its German rivals.
Basically the same review he did back in 2013 for CarBuyer.
Yeah but back he liked it but in this review he kind of just hated on it
Tried to buy an A45 from carwow twice and both times they never got back to me. Waste of time.
Hi, BlindingBlizzard. We only want to work with the best dealers so it’s disappointing to hear that. If you contact us at help@carwow.co.uk, we'll look into it for you. Hope you enjoyed the video :)
+carwow is the transmission only automatic? or is manual available?
rob DT there isn’t a manual
I had one of these facelift A-class as a loan car while my car was serviced. They actually have me one of the top spec cars, AMG Line with lots of options (I think it was A180).
And it was seriously a sh*t car for how much it costs. The interior quality isn't great at all, the new Astra or mk7 Golf is better. Also, the A-class doesn't feel as well thought out as you'd expect from a German car. The ride is harsh and yet handling isn't great too, as mentioned in the review. It's also quite noisy inside the cabin. And the infotainment system is crap.
If you're not a "badge snob", get yourself a well-specced Astra or Golf instead and you'll get a much better car. If you can spend extra, get the facelifted A3 if you need comfort; or a manual petrol 1-series if you want something fun to drive.
or better still, get a 1 series while it is still RWD, with an 8 speed auto box. Drives much better and is much quiter than this econo-box from Mercedes. BTW, I had the same experience as you, getting an A180 d while the C was serviced. It was really disappointing...
well to put it in its simplest form it has the same engine as the clio and a nissan micra 1.5 DCI/CDI wouldn't pay a penny for that ( cant afford it anyway , but even if i did i wouldn't ) .
1 series is butt ugly though
Hey while my Mercedes was being serviced they give me an a class also
rscosworthfan Yeha a class has much better looks
So glad i saw this review.
I am going to drive it as my very first car in UK. Love that hatch back design.
Same here
10k miles 2016 A180d
I had a look in real life and honesty I couldnt believe the quality feel of the interior I couldn’t fault it at all
@@JohnSmith-jy4qj i smoked a a180d in my ep2
I got a 180a se. its 6-7 out of 10. The ride is slightly harsh and noisy but its a nice car in general. plus points are the std spec is higher than most, leather seats, rev camera, sat nav and 80mpg, I also think its the best looker in the class. I got it for £175pm lease and couldn't find anything anywhere near that for the same spec, saying that I'm glad I didn't buy and can change after 2 years (I suppose that speaks volumes).
The « old » one had real exhaust pipes!!!
imagine buying this Mercedes only to find out its a rebadged Renault megane!
Except the new Megane is probably a better car than the A class.
It's just some bottom end engines and manual stop exaggerating
yes Renault engines and gear boxes..but you forgot about the chassis, suspension and exhaust system
Ahhh Nooo. I was so much inlove with the A45. Why did you put me of now? :-(
Well I don't really believe them anyway smith, from my knowledge it's just the bottom a160s and such that get the Renault gear so I wouldn't worry, the a class is a Mercedes chassis through and through
Any chance for a WRX or Sti review?
No
My dad got this as my first car in 2015 it was alright but i would only ever get a higher model after 5 months of having it i sold it got a mini with full spec i love it so overall a good first car or run around but not a forever car
1 series if you are the man, a-class if you are the girlfriend.
is it possible if you guys could possibly get a review on the A180 D SE please!. there's not a single review of the car and I'm really interested in it! love your videos keep up the good work

Despite the numerous negative points I would still pick this over the BMW never mind the A3...Seems like a desirable car
i tried acessing your website to get a deal on this car and i couldnt it was saying the page was down....?????

thanks lemme check it out again
Just go to a dealer and you get a similar deal...and most certainly better service.
Try it it's a brilliant website and you get the best deals, much more then the dealer would offer you if you haggled but as soon as your in contact I guess you could haggle more I use it and there is nothing else like it, it's Brilliant!
The road noise (or ambient noise, since it's sound recording we're dealing with) gives the feeling you have a window open. Mat's got a body mike, which you'd think would help, but the background din is somewhere between a rumble and a brewing storm. Or is it just a CarWow audio issue?
I love that there is no useless shifter or hand break in the central console...... taking up space
this car looks so good
Mat, love all your work, but may I ask who on Earth gives a dime on the rear seat space, especially for the third passenger?! How many owners drive more than themselves in these cars?
Majority of cars on road have only 1 seat occupied

You may talk again as soon as you have kids.
Sirion well said sir
Getting this for my first car hopefully when I'm like 20 after saving up a bit.
Don't get a CDI , get the motorsport if you're getting diesel, or 250-A45 for petrol
@novasigma5964 Thanks
This guy is a Mercedes Benz hater . I swear BMW or Audi paid him some money under the table just so that Mercedes Benz is classified as a car with most problems ! Come on serious...
Seriously, do you know a single comparison where the A class finishes first?
It's an ok car for premium money and well...most buyers want SOME practicality in a hatchback.
I heard of the A-class Mercedes it's OK but the boot look odd and Matt mentioned the splitting folding seats I'm like oh dear lol but funny
So this car is good for just twitter messaging? lol
Keeping up with the jones springs to mind
I have the A200d AMG Line (16 plate) and is a brilliant car. In the video they have picked the bottom of the range here and looks awful. the AMG Line with night pack and 2 litre is a very good car.
old style bumper I like more...agree
Dislike cup holders right in front of the center storage box. Gets in the way while shifting gears if you put bottles in it!
Literaly visibility in Mercedes cars, is *-10*/10....
Beware of the 1.5 diesel six speed box I recently repaired a CLA that had a broken first gear selector fork, one side had sheered at its root,at 40,000 miles I put it down to either lack of mechanical sympathy or a dodgy part. Then yesterday I had a 2017 A 180 cdi that if you selected first and released the clutch the transmission was obviously locking up and causing stalling. After a quick look it was clear that the box had been out and apart already at some time, the car has of now only covered 37,000 miles, dismantling revealed an already replaced first gear selector that had also snapped at its root and buried it's self between the gear clusters,I'm not columbo but I'd bet my house on the original snapping also,my tester mentioned the poorly designed slippers on the forks but it seems the fork snaps long before they even remotely start wearing, the replacement selector is like for like, good old MB! so I would guess it won't be the last time that that box is coming out! I'm guessing it's MB's own unit as it is mounted to an adapter plate to fit renaults 1.5 engine.
Can you show how to open the middle storage boxes.
It's a shame we can't get this in Canada. We would love a budget Mercedes-Benz here. Same with the Bmw 1 series hatchback.
I own an A250 and its great!
'desirable and stylish' should be accentuated as criticism because the car doesn't worth the price.
If only Mercedes publicised more that their diesel models are using a Renault engine.
Please can the volume be increased when recording? I find it difficult to hear even with full volume on my laptop. Also, the sound suddenly increases or decreases. Thanks
Rented this car once in England, absolutely hated it. Got a backache just by driving it for 3 days
Another plus is that hold it's value a lot better than others.
Still, rather drive the 1-series
Why is it more desirable if rivals are better to drive and more practical? Because it's a Merc? You mean, it's desirable because you're paying more money for something that has equivalent but cheaper rivals? That sounds like the complete opposite of what carwow is meant to be about.
The title of the video should be ‘I hate the A Class’
I drove a pre-facelift example in driving school and got my licence, which is great knowing what a piece of rubbish that car was. It was cramped, full of cheap plastic, had a terrible clutch, its gear shifter was often getting stuck and the steering wheel was giving me no information about what front wheels were doing. I really expected more from a Mercedes.
The infotainment link is wrong, takes you to the Lexus RC 😐
Not sure what the general reliability is like, but my A class has been in the garage for a week
How much costs? More than 10,000 euros for sure
high belt line, lower roof line, makes the hatch back look good in its class. and i agree with you Mat, the facelifted doesnt look improved, more like mecedes saying 'hey, hold up there, we're gonna develop a new A class soon, so buy these for now!'
and, sorry Mercs, i didn't buy your A45 AMG two years ago because of that iPad like centre monitor.
I still don't understand why he mentions door bins a lot. I'm not too sure if you would reconsider your purchase due to small door bins. Just a question
Is the engine noise level a little bit higher than in a BMW 120d?
What is weird is that this is the exact opposite of what he said in his A-Class CarBuyer video. He even said the manual gearbox was much better than the automatic.
They’re different models
@getshrekt9023 Yeah he reviewed the AMG on CarBuyer. Still very confusing though for buyers. I've driven this car, it isn't great.

My driving school had a similar A-Class and I didn't really like it.
It's alright, but nothing I'd personally buy.
It's already a rather small car and the interior does indeed feel quite claustrophobic, the rear window is basically useless when reversing and looking over your left shoulder is also pointless because the B-pillar will block your view. It also felt quite cheap.
What's also really annoying is the fact that the gas pedal was so far to the right that the plastic covers down in the foot region were sometimes blocking me from using the gas pedal, depending on which shoes I was wearing. Over all not too great.
For someone who talked good on carbuyer about the older a class. Now that hes on his own website carwow, where he can REALLY talk his mind. Matt has absolutely roasted this car XD
Why wont you test the sound systems
Review the Alfa Romeo Giulia PLEAASE!
@joshua L not sure about the 1.5 engine in the Mazda? heard not that great and MPG poor on Motorways? i like the look of the Volvo V40 but think the bigger Volvo's look a tad better and their engines are made by either PSA or Ford so rather just get a Focus and also not sure if it will be as good to drive as it looks? at the moment the Focus for the good drive as i use to have a older one or go for the Golf for a more relaxed drive and comfortable long journeys and better build quality never had a VW but the Golf has always looked liked it has been made very well.
for me personally I'd buy the volvo V40 as I think all things considered its the best premium hatchback.
+Joshua L Yes ,the V40 is the best premium hatch and the D4 engine is benchmark the only problems are backseat space (not as good as Golf, still better than A class/1 series) .Also Mazda 3 and Alfa Romeo Giulietta are 2 of the better premium hatchbacks.
Anuj Naik I thought the V40 is better for back seat space compared to the Merc. Not as good as the A3 or golf. I haven't driven the new D4 engine but from what I've heard its excellent!
The A-Team! :D
This car is for people who desperately want a new car with three-pointed star, but can't afford a true Mercedes
Wannabe showoffs
Your sunglasses make you look like exactly that kind of wannabe.
what is that suppose to mean
It would be too embarrassing to drive around in 😂 does it matter about the shite steering no way! as long as it has that badge on the front 😂.Would rather have a VW Golf, Vauxhall Astra or Ford Focus.

New style. I hope we get this in the U.S of A. Since the CLA isn't doing well here compared to Audi's A3
Ive always wondered why you guys dont get these cool hatches
My dad used to have an A220d but he got rid of it after 4 months because it was so crap! He now drives a 2.0 tdi A3 which is far better
Audi makes the best daily driving cars.
It's their specialty. You can daily any of their cars. Even the R8 is comfortable and has enough room in the frunk for two people's luggage when going on a trip. Sure, a bimmer feels much better in the corners and you don't have to be a driving master to get it to do amazing times, but I would sacrifice that any day for Quattro, interior room and comfort and the huge trunks of their Avants.
Plus Audi / VW encourage you to socialise as you'll soon be on first name terms with your dealer, breakdown driver etc.
They make the best daily driving cars???? Where are your fact/figures? Have you driven cars from every manufacturer?
+livc444111 just by watching the reviews audi is the best car in daily use and real life driving, audi A3 is the best one in its category, same with the A4 A1 Q7 Q5 Q3 A7, even in the performance cars from QUATTRO GMBH their car are the fastest cars for every day use useable power
livc444111 You can't quantify comfort and usability my friend. The A4, for instance, has the biggest trunk in it's class, as well as the best interior storage spaces, is supremely quiet and comfortable, as well as extremely well built with high quality materials. The BMW 3 series meanwhile, is more focused on "sportiness" for the sake of it's owners being able to say they drive a sporty sedan, whilst it sacrifices interior quality and room, trunk and storage space and comfort, and the Mercedes C-class is so wrapped up in the fact that it has the badge, that it also lags behind the Audi in terms of quality and comfort.
If you can shove more crap in your car, and it's comfortable as well as being incredibly stable on the road, whilst making you feel like you are in something nice and rock-solid, then it's a great daily.
this car is basically budget mercedes, nothing unexpected
It's fine if you compare it to it's rivals, not if you compare it to anything above a C-Class (which is a fantastic car).
That is why you don't compare it to anything above a class... Just look at the infotainment controller Mercedes changed that controller a few years ago
no it's not fuck off
Hey Mat. I am ur fan in Australia. Can u do a car review in CLA shooting brake if it is possible. Just wondering.

Yes they do

I really don't understand why anyone would waste time on buying an A-class over the brilliant VW golf. The A45 is interesting but the standard trims positively scream 'clueless badge snob'.
Who wants to drive a vw?
